  • Size

Adult males can be 1.5–2.1 meters long and weigh around 140 kilograms, while adult females are usually 1.4 meters long and weigh about 50 kilograms. 

  • Breeding

Juan Fernandez fur seals mate from November to December and have a gestation period of about 12 months. Females give birth to a single pup on land and nurse them. 

  • Milk

The milk of Juan Fernandez fur seals has the highest fat and energy content of any member of the Otariidae family. This allows the pups to grow quickly despite long periods of fasting. 

  • Diving

Juan Fernandez fur seals can dive as deep as 90–100 meters and stay underwater for over 6 minutes. They mostly forage at night. 

  • Postures

Juan Fernandez fur seals rest in a variety of postures, including head down with hind flippers raised and swaying in the air, or asleep at the surface with their hind flippers tucked under a fore flipper.

Male Juan Fernandez fur seals may live over 13 years, while females may live up to 23 years.

   Juan Fernandez fur seals are likely preyed upon by blue and great       white sharks, killer whales, and possibly leopard seals.
