AQUATIC ADAPTATIONS OF MARINE MAMMALS
Marine Mammals are well adapted for life in water. Cetaceans
and sirenians are fully aquatic, whereas pinnipeds, sea otters & polar bear
are amphibious spending some time on land or ice where they gave birth, molt
and rest.
Marine fissipedia, pinnipeds are more common with polar bear
& weasels. The cetaceans are more closely related to camels & hippos.
The sirenians are closely allied to elephants & hyraxes.
All Marine Mammals have one thing in common they derive all
of their food from marine water or sometime freshwater.
Similarly, the eyes, nose, ears and limbs of marine mammals
have changed in association with their ability to live in variety of aquatic
environments which includes saltwater, brackish and fresh water.
Pinnipeds have front and hind limbs modified as flippers that
propel them in the water and still provide serviceable limbs for locomotion on
land.
In cetaceans and sirenians the hind limbs are virtually
absent and locomotion is accomplished by vertical movements of the powerful
hind flukes.
