  • Population

California sea lions are the only species of sea lion whose population is expanding. This is due to the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which has protected them since at least 1975. 

  • Swimming

California sea lions are fast swimmers, reaching speeds of up to 25 miles per hour. They can stay underwater for up to 10 minutes. 

  • Social

California sea lions are very social and live in colonies of hundreds to thousands of animals. They are often seen "rafting" in the water, where they lay motionless with their flippers above the surface. 

  • Barking

California sea lions are very vocal, with a constant, piercing barking that can be heard from a distance. 

  • Size

Male California sea lions can grow to be up to 8.4 feet long and weigh up to 1,153 pounds. Females are generally smaller, growing to be up to 6 feet long and weighing up to 250 pounds. 

  • Playfulness

California sea lions are known for being playful and can be seen body surfing. 

  • Walking

 California sea lions are members of the otariid, or "walking  seal", family. They can walk or run on land by bringing all four flippers underneath their bodies. 

  • Ear flaps

California sea lions have distinctive external ear flaps. 

  • Sagittal crest

   Male California sea lions develop a bony bump on top of         their skull called a sagittal crest, starting at 4 years old.
