Exploitation and Conservation

Marine mammals have become vulnerable or endangered due to human exploitation. Marine conservation is the protection of marine ecosystem and species to prevent over- exploitation.

Marine Mammal Conservation:
The MMPA makes it our job to protect all whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions. This law prohibits, with certain exceptions, the "take" of marine mammals—including harassment, hunting, capture, collection, or killing—in U.S. waters and by U.S. citizens on the high seas.

Importance and Conservation Of the Marine Environment:
Oceans play an important part in the global climate system. They absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide and generate about half of all oxygen. The surface layer of the ocean also absorbs and distributes the heat reaching Earth from the sun. This controls global temperatures and the weather.

Activities Threaten The Survival Of Marine Mammals:

Many marine mammal populations are decreasing to critical levels largely due to human actions including; accidental capture in fishing gear (entanglement and by catch), habitat destruction, pollution, commercial hunting, increase in ocean noise, increase in vessel traffic, and ship strikes.

History of marine mammal protection act:
The Marine Mammal Protection Act was first enacted in 1972. It responded to a growing public concern at that time over the health and welfare of marine mammals like seals, whales, dolphins, manatees, and sea lions. Gray seal pups.
