Some Fun Facts About Baikal Seal:

  •        Size

·       Baikal seals are small seals, averaging 1.3 meters in length and weighing between 50–130 kg. Males are slightly larger than females.

  •        Appearance

·       Baikal seals have dense fur that is dark in color, with a silvery gray back and a lighter yellowish gray front. Some have spotted coats, but these are rare.

  •       Teeth

·       Baikal seals have comb-like cheek teeth that help them feed on amphipods. These teeth allow them to retain small amphipods and expel water while diving quickly.

  •        Eyes

·       Baikal seals have large eyes that help them find prey in the clear, deep waters of Lake Baikal.

  •        Habitat

·       Baikal seals are found only in Lake Baikal in southern Siberia.

  •       Threats

·       The main threats to Baikal seals are water pollution and climate change. Water pollution exposes them to PCBs and DDT, while climate change could affect the thickness and duration of ice, which impacts their feeding and breeding habits.
