- Appearance
Ribbon seals have dark bodies with four
nearly white bands or ribbons around their necks, front flippers, and
hips. Their eyes are very large and appear all black.
- Diving
Ribbon seals can dive up to 200 meters
(656 feet) in search of food.
- Movement
Ribbon seals run over ice by alternating
their front flippers and swinging their hindquarters back and forth.
- Internal air sack
Ribbon seals are the only seals with an
internal air sack on the right side of their body over their ribs. This
sack is believed to be used for underwater vocalizations.
- Lifespan
Ribbon seals can live up to 30 years,
but they likely live about 20 years on average.
- Social behavior
Ribbon seals are relatively solitary,
but they form loose aggregations on pack ice during spring to give birth, nurse
pups, and molt.
- Diet
Ribbon seals
located in the Bering Sea consume Pollock, eelpout, and arctic cod.
Ribbon
seals are part of a group of animals known as pinnipeds, which also includes
seals, sea lions, and walruses.
