About Fur Seals

A n Interesting Fact About Fur Seal: Seals have ear holes , while Northern fur seals have visible ear flaps . Also, they use their fore-flippers to propel through the " water" and “ walk ” on land, while seals " scoot" along on their bellies on land. Domain Eukaryota Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Clade Pinnipedia Family Otariidae Sub Family Arctocephalinea Genera Arctocephalus, Callorhinus Some Fun Facts About Fur Seals: External ears   Fur seals have small, external ears, unlike other seals.  Two-layered fur   Fur seals have two layers of fur, while other seals have only one.  Sleep on their backs  Northern fur seals sleep on their backs in the water, with their fins sticking up, in a position called the "jug-handle".  Long...

About Sea lions

Some Interesting Facts About Sea lion:   Name Sea lions are named after lions because male sea lions have manes and roar to defend their groups.  Movement   Sea lions are adapted to move both on land and in water. They use their front flippers for propulsion and their hind flippers for steering.  Free diving   Sea lions are expert free divers and can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes. Some species can dive up to 984 feet.   Domain Eukaryota Kingdom Animalia Phylum Chordata Class Mammalia Order Carnivora Clade Pinnipedia Family Otariidae Sub Family Otariinae Genera Eumetopias,Neophoca,Otaria,Phocarctos,Zalophus Lifespan Sea lions typically live 20–30 years.  Size   The size of sea lions varies by species. For example, California...

Order Carnivora (Pinnipeds and Marine Fissipedia)

The marine mammals in the order Carnivora include: Fur seals, sea lions, true seals, walruses, chungungo, sea otters, and polar bears. Carnivores are mammals with highly modified teeth that are adapted to shear flesh.  They are also known for their strength, speed, and keen senses for hunting. Marine mammals are warm-blooded, have hair or fur, breathe air through lungs, and give birth to live young.  They nurse their young with milk produced by mammary glands and live all or part of their life in the ocean. Exploitation and Conservation

Marine mammals have become vulnerable or endangered due to human exploitation. Marine conservation is the protection of marine ecosystem and species to prevent over- exploitation.  Marine Mammal Conservation: The MMPA makes it our job to protect all whales, dolphins, porpoises, seals, and sea lions. This law prohibits, with certain exceptions, the "take" of marine mammals—including harassment, hunting, capture, collection, or killing—in U.S. waters and by U.S. citizens on the high seas. Importance and Conservation Of the Marine Environment: Oceans play an important part in the global climate system.  They absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide and generate about half of all oxygen . The surface layer of the ocean also absorbs and distributes the heat reaching Earth from the sun. This controls global temperatures and the weather.   Activities Threaten The Survival Of Marine Mammals: Many marine mammal populations are decreasing to critical levels largely due t...

Feeding Ecology

Feeding ecology  examines the dietary habits and nutritional strategies of organisms and how these influence their interactions within ecosystems .   Some marine mammals consume huge numbers of prey items at a time ( batch feeding ) while others attack and consume prey items singly (raptorial feeding) . Many marine mammals forage in large groups while others feed alone. Larger animals, including some marine snails, fish, reptiles, and mammals, graze  on algae. Filter feeders strain their food (plankton and detritus) directly from the water. Filter feeding animals include animals like bivalves, tube worms, sponges, and even large animals like baleen whales and manta rays. Sirenians, the only extant herbivorous marine mammals, Graze feeding on marine grasses and algae . Manatees feed on the blades, leaves, and stems of a variety of aquatic and terrestrial plants, including grasses (e.g., water hyacinth and water thyme Hydrilla), sedges, forbs, herbs, and mangroves...

Reproduction

All marine mammals reproduce sexually . Cetaceans and sirenians undergo the entire process of reproduction in the water. The remaining marine mammal groups generally breed and give birth on land.   How Do Marine Animals Reproduce: Reproductive strategies abound in the ocean where we have  fission, budding, eggs hatching externally, eggs hatching internally, live births , some marine animals are born in freshwater, some are born on land, etc. What Are The Different Types Of Marine Reproduction: Marine reproductive strategies are diverse and include methods such as  broadcast spawning, where numerous species release eggs and sperm into the water for external fertilization, and brooding , where some marine organisms protect and develop their offspring internally or within specialized structures. Evolutionary History

About 65 million years ago (mya) when dinosaurs became mostly extinct, marine mammals began to evolve from their land-dwelling ancestors .  Their evolution into sea-dwelling mammals is thought to be a result of the availability of new marine food sources and a way to escape from their terrestrial predators. Marine mammals evolved from land mammals over millions of years,  and their evolution is characterized by a number of key features: Multiple Origins Each group of marine mammals evolved from a different group of land mammals, including carnivores, artiodactyls, and proboscideans.  Convergent Evolution Despite their different origins, marine mammals have evolved similar features, such as streamlined bodies, paddle-like limbs, and tails.  Complex Adaptations Marine mammals have evolved complex adaptations to their new marine environment, including changes to their reproductive physiology, structure, and behavior.  Transition from land to water The transition ...

Aquatic Adaptations Of Marine Mammals

Below are some other marine mammal adaptations for living in the ocean. (fins or flippers) to swim fast through water. High levels of hemoglobin and myoglobin store extra oxygen in blood and muscles while diving. Exhale prior to diving to tolerate pressure changes by removing air from their body. Special Feature of water Mammals: An aquatic mammal is a mammal species that has adaptations for a life in freshwater environments, such as  modifications of limbs and tail for swimming, waterproof pelage, and specialized ears and nose to prevent water ingress during diving . Cetology

🐋🐋🐋  CETOLOGY is Discovered by The Greek Philosopher Aristotle Cetology is the branch of zoology that deals with the study of Marine Mammals that include whales, dolphins, porpoise, etc.... 🐳🐳🐳 Here are some of the main groups of marine mammals:   Cetaceans       This order includes whales, dolphins, porpoises and originated 55.5 million years ago. Pinnipeds       This order includes seals, sea lion, walruses and originated from terrestrial carnivores. Sirenians       This order includes manatees and dugongs and originated from common ancestor with terrestrial proboscideans. To Know More About Visit: https://marinewar.blogspot.com/p/cetology.html
